“Heartworms, Fleas, Ticks Oh My!”

Posted April 25th, 2008

Attention Pet Lovers:

Spring is upon us and not only does the warm weather in Minnesota bring us road construction and detours, but also the nasty little parasites that will try to infect our pets with disease.  It is up to us to do everything possible to protect our pets from heartworm,  tick borne diseases (ie. lyme disease, anaplasmosis), flea infestation and other intestinal parasites.  All it takes is one mosquito or tick to infect a pet with disease, this is why we recommend that all pets, indoors and out, be on a monthly heartworm preventative.  For those pets that also go outdoors, get groomed, go to dog parks or are kenneled a flea & tick preventative is also recommended.

To help address the individual needs of all our cat and dog patients we offer a variety of safe and effective heartworm, flea and tick preventatives.  Our staff will discuss with you the options available for your pet, based on their individual needs.

Dogs are required to be tested once per year (preferrably in the early spring) to make sure they did not get infected in the previous season due to a missed dose or incomplete ingestion of the preventative.  Detecting heartworm disease in the early stages will help minimize the damage caused by these parasites so this is very important.  .

Even indoor only cats can become infected with heartworm disease.

Take advantage of the REDUCED price of a Wellness Blood Profile when you perform a Heartworm Test on your pet!

Did you know that bloodwork can detect the early changes associated with underlying metabolic disease prior to your pet showing signs of illness?  Catching these problems before clinical signs develop may not only improve your pets quality of life but may also save you money in the long run.

We recommend that all pets 5 years and older and any pet that is receiving medication for other medical conditions have yearly blood screening to evaluate for any underlying kidney, liver, blood sugar or protein level problems.  Testing a pet when they are clinically healthy is also of great value as it gives us something to compare to when the pet is ill.

If you perform a Wellness Profile with your pets Heartworm test, we will give you the SPECIAL DISCOUNTED PRICE ($24 off the Regular price) for the profile,  but this  is only valid when it is performed with a heartworm test.

DENTAL HEALTH

Does your pet have bad breathe, discolored teeth or red swollen gums?  If you answered yes to any of these questions then your pet has dental disease.  85% of pets are affected by oral infection by the age of 3 years.  If the dental disease is not treated the problems progress and your pet will be at risk for developing more serious problems.
